  This digest reviews scientific and methodological problems in special education research related to race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. The first section of the digest discusses the various definitions of race, ethnicity, culture, and socioeconomic status.
• Critical Issues in Social Studies Research for the 21st Century. Research in Social Education Series
  Social studies is a field struggling to reconcile multiple and, at times, conflicting rationales. The beginning of a century is an appropriate time to reflect on the condition of social studies and to question where the world has been and where it is going.
• Diversity Issues in Educational Research. Keynote Address
  To be mindful of diversity issues, educational research must expand its dimensions, analyze assumptions, include researchers with authentic perspective, rethink the impact of research consumption, and redefine parameters of researchers' work. Also important are the gatekeeping function of refereed journals, multidimensionality of diversity, choice of research topics, and influence of politics.
• The Status of Research on Multicultural Education in Teacher Education and Special Education: Problems, Pitfalls, and Promises
  Examines the existing research on multiculturalism in general teacher education and special education teacher preparation programs. Results find that a significant degree of research on multicultural teacher education has been narrow in scope and has utilized a pre/post test design to measure student growth.
