  • Building Communities From the Inside Out: A Path Toward Finding and Mobilizing a Community’s Assets
    This publication by the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern University, builds on the work of McKnight and others stressing informal, community-based supports and affiliations to build inclusive communities. The book discusses how communities can rediscover and ”map” all of their local assets; how to build on these rediscovered assets to become more self-reliant and empowered neighborhoods and communities; and how ”outsiders” (professionals, government officials, and representatives from the philanthropic sector) can contribute to this process.
  • Integrated classrooms versus resource model: Academic viability and effectiveness
    Inclusion remains a controversial concept in education because it relates to educational and social values, as well as to our sense of individual worth. Any discussion about inclusion should address several important questions: Do we value all children equally? Is anyone more or less valuable? What do we mean by "inclusion?" Are there some children for whom "inclusion" is inappropriate?.

    This video was designed to help adults and children feel more comfortable around people with disabilities, keep the attention of children over five years old and adults, show how people with disabilities get around, work, and communicate, promote discussion in groups and classrooms about disabilities, help viewers recognize barriers that exist for people with disabilities and encourage children with disabilities to strive toward their goals.
