The Role of Empathy in Teaching Culturally Diverse Students: A Qualitative Study of Teachers' Beliefs

Investigated teachers' beliefs about the role of empathy in their effectiveness with culturally diverse students. All respondents had participated in a multicultural professional development course geared to fostering culturally responsive practice. Teachers felt that empathy was necessary, but not sufficient, for working with culturally diverse students. Teachers considered the most valuable experiences in the course to be cultural immersion trips, cross-cultural simulation, and their own experiences as minorities. (SM)
