Improving Pupil Attendance: Inclusive and Sensitive Approaches
Describes a British secondary school's efforts to improve student attendance by promoting social inclusion. The project involved a first day absence monitor, school counselor, Education Welfare Officer, and specialist teacher. Participants worked to raise student attendance levels and awareness of reasons for it. The initiative succeeded because it was sensitive to reasons for student absences (e.g., visits to home countries) and it encouraged full communication with all involved. (SM)
