Violence in Schools: Multiple Realities
The topic of school violence is becoming an increasingly contentious issue. Claims are made by parents and the media that educators are intentionally downplaying the true nature and extent of the problem. Educators, on the other hand, accuse the media of playing on isolated incidents in order to fuel public hysteria. Unfortunately, many of the supporting data for both sides of the issue have been drawn from largely secondary sources (e.g., teachers, politicians, the media, police), not from students themselves.
