Who Needs Multicultural Education? White Students, U.S. History, and the Construction of a Usable Past
A multicultural U.S. history curriculum offered in a mostly White middle school that focuses on the experiences of African-American slaves during the Civil War is described. This focus undermines students' ability to use history as a resource for thinking about contemporary race relations. A multicultural history curriculum is suggested. (MMU)
