A Computerized Screening Instrument of Language Learnability
This article presents further analyses of a pilot study that examined the effectiveness of a computerized language screening instrument for 60 multicultural children (ages 7-8). Results suggest that because of its computerization and language learnability features, this innovative instrument may be an effective alternative to current screening procedures.

This article explores some problems and recent solutions to the use of norm-referenced testing of children who are culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD). It describes two promising procedures to provide unbiased assessment of CLD children's language and literacy: the use of processing-dependent measures and of dynamic assessment measures.

Attrition/retention of urban special education teachers: Multi-faceted research and strategic action planning.
This paper reports on a study investigating the issues that most significantly influence urban special education teachers' decisions to leave the field voluntarily or transfer to a different type of educational position. First, it presents the results of post-attrition interviews with 17 special educators who left their positions during or immediately following the 1991-92 school year and then reports results of a survey of 868 special educators in three urban areas.

Functional and structural analyses of behavior: Approaches leading to reduced use of punishment procedures?
Emerging approaches for dealing with inappropriate behaviors of the disabled involve conducting a functional or structural behavior analysis to isolate the factors responsible for the aberrant behavior and implementing corrective procedures (often alternatives to punishment) relevant to the function of the inappropriate behavior.

Toward prescriptive alternatives to suspensions: A preliminary evaluation
A study examined the extent of discipline programs, the use of suspension, and the procedural integrity of the disciplinary policy at a large urban high school. Subjects for phase 1 were 150 students with disciplinary referrals to the vice principal's office, and subjects for phase 2 were 23 middle and high school students who had been suspended.

Wanted: Minority Educators for U.S. Schools
Although necessary for a diversified student body, minority teachers are underrepresented due to a lingering resistance to integration efforts, unappealing classroom conditions, salary issues, and culturally biased professional exams. Equitable placement procedures, incentives, competitive salaries, mentoring programs, subject-area recruitment, and multicultural training are partial remedies.
